Yes... but with the ability to pull out line and be versatile when I need it. That's why I ended up going away from tenkara after trying it several times.

@@WhiteDogTrailCompany its like rifle vs bow hunting. I don't get the animosity western fly fishing has for Tenkara. I use both western and tenkara flies. Its all about getting out. Thanks

@@orlyg1521 Agreed! I learned a lot from someone who was a tenkara fisherman early on. I was pretty jazzed up about it when I started it and had some good trips... but I ended up liking traditional methods more in the long run. I think everyone should try it though to see and not bring anyone down about using it. You are 100% right... it is about getting out and enjoying the experience! I should make my next small stream trip a tenkara trip :)

I like how you took us along and actually showed us first hand how to read and cast a dry fly to these pretty little gems first hand. You basically gave us so much more info.than if we were to read a book on it. But watching you actually tell where they might or should be and then actually have those pretty little native brookies come out and take your dry fly is sooo cool. Hey Larry! Glad to hear you're doing well. I'm having a pretty good summer. We had to cancel our 2 camping trips but we've been enjoying the summer! I haven't fished since June though... those 90 degree days have me leaving the fish alone for a bit. I'm sure the small streams are plenty cold though.

@@WhiteDogTrailCompany I haven't been out for trout at all. Only hitting bass on the river basically. I bought my VT license very early this year hoping it would force me over there, but life gets in the way! Hopefully this fall!

Small stream trout are not really picky... they have to be opportunistic. Check out that other video I linked.

I haven't tried it but I'm sure you can. Just experiment and see what works for you. If it is egg looking, they'll hit it!

Big migratory steelhead are so much fun! Glad you have easy access to them where you are! Egg flies work very well on them! Especially if you get salmon runs before the steelies.

Double fly rigs usually get tangled up due to the casting motion. If you try to keep a somewhat of an oval pattern when casting the flies they do not get tangled up. The only time I get tangled is when I set the hook on a fish or it comes off the bottom and starts flying out of the water toward a tree and I quickly whip the rod down... that almost always ends up in a tangle which is utterly annoying to deal with!

I always say, start with what you have. a 10' 7 weight is not a bad place to start! Spoiler... the Diamondback Ideal Nymph 6wt is really the best rod for euro nymphing steelhead... it was designed specifically for that purpose and it blows me away every time I fish it!

In my local waters the browns tend to survive better while the bows tend not to hold over well. In rivers where they have stocked both, the browns have either held over or even become a wild population while the bows tend not to be able to survive long. Not sure why.

It's up to you, but I typically do about 1 inch on either end of the hook. You can go longer though.

Yeah... I played with different ways to tie is a bunch of years ago and this was by far the best way I came up with. The dubbing along the ends of the squirmy material make a huge difference with how long the flies last!
